Our Story

Offshore Surfschool was born from Pedro's dream of sharing his passion for surfing, nature, and the ocean. After retiring from surf competitions, Pedro combined his accumulated experience and knowledge with his lifelong passion to create the vibrant community that Offshore has become.

Established in 2014, we know these sandy shores of Praia da Barra and surroundings like the back of our surfboards. As a family-run business deeply rooted in the local surf culture, we're committed to preserving our origins while fostering a welcoming environment where learning and fun go hand in hand. We believe in creating a laid-back and friendly environment where you can learn at your own pace while having fun.

We are dedicated to teaching the technical aspects of surfing, and to promote a sense of respect for the ocean, spreading the message that it is both a playground and a teacher. We want to inspire and nurture the next generations of surfers to chase their dreams.

Our Area and Region

We are lucky to call this place our home. Aveiro, Portugal, is a charming region known for its picturesque landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant atmosphere. Explore the iconic Aveiro Lagoon, a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, or stroll through the quaint streets lined with colorful Art Nouveau buildings. Indulge in the region's culinary delights, including the famous ovos moles, and immerse yourself in its lively festivals and traditional music. With its blend of natural beauty and cultural treasures, Aveiro offers a truly unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.

The Founder

Meet Pedro, the heart and soul behind Offshore. From his early days, Pedro practically grew up in the water, diving into surfing and skating at a young age. His journey took him to competitive surfing's highest levels. A regular at the WSL, MEO liga, ISA, he won the national championship under 18 and Europe’s Championship in 2011.

For over two decades, Pedro's passion and dedication fueled his competitive spirit, leading him to travel the world, connect with diverse cultures, and constantly hone his skills. Today, he wears many hats — as a surf instructor, father, friend, manager, lifeguard, handyman, and even a weekend chef. Yet, at his core, Pedro remains forever a surfer at heart.

João Dias

Favorite waves is Teahupo’o.
He's also a Kitesurf fan.

João says: "Surfing is a challenging sport that demands balance, strength, and technique. Each wave is an opportunity to overcome personal limits and learn something new. The constant challenge of mastering new skills and facing variable conditions keeps surfing exciting and motivating. Despite the chaos that the ocean can sometimes bring, it is also a source of tranquility and life. Being in the sea has a calming effect on the mind, helping to alleviate the stress and anxiety of daily life."

R. Dantas

More than 15 years surfing.

Favorite wave is Super Tubos.

"Growing up in Praia da Barra, I was deeply connected to the ocean. I started bodyboarding at the age of 10, but it wasn't until four years later, when I first stood up on a surfboard, that I truly fell in love with surfing. To me, it's more than just a sport; it's a way of thinking, connecting, and living. Board riding has become an integral part of my life. When it snows, I head to the mountains, and when there are waves, I search the coast for the best ones. And when I'm not doing either, you'll find me "surfing" in a bowl! Above all, I love sharing my passion for this incredible sport with anyone who's interested."

Matthias Bernardo

More than 15 years surfing.

Favorite waves are Anchor Point and Areão.

Founder and owner of "Casa do Aço," a community dedicated to health and wellness. A travel enthusiast with a background in Civil Engineering and Management, Matthias brings a diverse range of experiences to our team. As a former athlete in boxing and men's physique, he understands the importance of physical fitness and personal well-being

Hugo Caçola

More than 13 years surfing.
Favorite waves are Ribeira d'Ilhas e Poço da Cruz.

"Since I was 8 years old, I've been riding boards under my feet. It all started with skateboarding, then transitioned to snowboarding. From there, my passion for crafting handmade items emerged, leading me to start making snowboards. Surfboards also became part of my journey, driven by my desire to create unique things that stimulate my creativity. Shaping surfboards to express that creativity allows me to explore different surfing styles. Teaching surfing is a way for me to help others who want to enter this exciting world."

Sérgio Cardoso (Dunga)

With 29 years devoted to surfing, he's a true veteran of the waves.

Favorite wave can be found at the iconic beach of Buarcos.

"As a certified coach by the Portuguese Surfing Federation since 1996, I eagerly share my vast knowledge and love for the ocean. Surfing is more than just a sport to me—it's a way of life. It's about connecting with nature, chasing the perfect wave, and feeling utterly free. My goal is to help my students master techniques and navigate the complexities of the sea, so they can fully immerse themselves in the joy of surfing."
