Flat Panel Detector – A Technical Overview**

A flat-panel detector is an advanced imaging device used in digital radiography, fluoroscopy, and other diagnostic systems. It captures X-ray images and converts them into digital signals with high clarity and speed. Flat-panel detectors have replaced traditional film-based methods due to their efficiency, image quality, and lower radiation requirements.

Two main technologies exist:

  1. Indirect conversion detectors – use scintillators to convert X-rays into light before converting them into electrical signals.

  2. Direct conversion detectors – convert X-rays directly into electrical charges using semiconductor materials such as amorphous selenium.

These detectors offer several advantages, including high resolution, fast image acquisition, immediate viewing, and the ability to store patient images digitally. They also reduce the need for repeat imaging due to better sensitivity and dynamic range.
